News from Morningside Heights 

  • The Eric. H. Holder Jr. Initiative for Civil and Political Rights challenges students to extend the foundation of the Core Curriculum into a contemporary context by encouraging scholarly inquiry and civic engagement. Its inaugural project addresses the pressing challenges of American voting through events, programs and courses.
     
  • Columbia and IBM established a new cross-disciplinary research centerdevoted to the future of data sharing; areas of focus include blockchain, encryption, privacy and regulations. The Center also includes an innovation accelerator to allow students to stretch their entrepreneurial muscles with faculty and business leaders. 
  • Columbia alumnus Arthur Ashkin ('47CC) won the Nobel Prize in Physics for his pioneering work in laser physics, joining a distinguished line of 30 Nobel laureates in physics who have been affiliated with Columbia University.
     
  • Columbia launched a new website in support of undergraduate well-being. The Live Well | Learn Well website guides students to academic, wellness, spiritual, community and other support services on campus.
