The Best Ever St. Pat's Celebration

Missouri S&T has been celebrating St. Pat’s since 1908, when a group of Rolla students declared that St. Patrick was the patron saint of engineers. Each fall semester, the student-run St. Pat's Board holds 150 and 100 "DAZE" events in anticipation of the coming celebration. When students return to school after a much-needed Winter Break, they immediately start counting the "Daze" to St. Pats.

Once 50 Daze hits, the S&T community will kick-off the St. Pat's season with a trivia night where members of different fraternities, sororities, organizations, and other communities will form teams to earn points in the annual St. Pat's Competition. Before the Celebration can officially start, the young and strong students among Missouri S&T's organizations must defend the campus from the impending Snake Invasion! The "10 DAZE" long celebration kicks off with the selection of St. Pat and his highest court members, comprised of the senior representatives of the St. Pat's Board. St. Pat’s celebrations in Rolla may look a little different this year, however plans are currently being finalized for a safe and socially distanced 113th Best Ever. Please go to stpats.mst.edu to find out more historical information and the events planned for this year!

Kummer Vanguard Scholars Program

The Kummer Vanguard Scholars Program is a new competitive program established through a portion of a generous gift of $300 million from June and Fred Kummer, longtime supporters of Missouri S&T. The Kummers’ vision is to provide greater opportunities for qualified and deserving students to pursue college degrees in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Fred earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from S&T and went on to establish HBE Corporation, a leading design-build firm for hospitals and health care facilities. His wish for the scholarship that bears the Kummer name is to provide today’s students with the same world-class education he received at S&T.

The Kummer Vanguard Scholars Program is limited to 350 to 400 STEM scholars each year. Each Kummer Vanguard Scholar will receive $1,000-$3,000 a year for four years. These scholarships may be combined with other university scholarships to provide a broader array of financial support for students. Students from around the world will be selected based on academic and non-academic criteria.

Exclusive opportunities

Kummer Vanguard Scholars will engage in a breadth of special opportunities and programs, including the following:

  • Free attendance at one of the Kummer Miner Immersion three-day* events on the S&T campus during the spring prior to the start of their first semester.
  • The Kummer Vanguard Scholars kickoff event prior to Opening Week.
  • Opportunities to serve on the Kummer Vanguard Scholars Student Council.
  • Mentorship provided by a previous Kummer Vanguard Scholar, a senior-level faculty member, Kummer Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E) Doctoral Fellow or a university leader.
  • Participation in a rotational program with focus areas in entrepreneurship, undergraduate research, leadership, community services and more.
  • Participation in the annual Kummer Vanguard Scholars Day, a two-day conference showcasing experts from industry and academia.
  • Opportunities, beginning with their sophomore year, to serve as mentors to newly admitted Kummer Vanguard Scholars.

*Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, for the academic year 20-21, this event will be a ½ a day event.

Program Requirements

  • A cumulative GPA of 3.4 on an unweighted 4.0 scale and a 26+ ACT/1240+ SAT score*.
  • Pursued a rigorous course of study in high school in math and science courses.
  • Show evidence of readiness for and commitment to pursuing STEM majors, including biological/life sciences, physics, chemistry, computer science, information sciences, engineering or mathematics.
  • Joining S&T as a first-time freshmen for the Fall 2021 semester.
  • Admission to a STEM program at S&T and securing a spot for advising and registration (A&R) by selecting a date to attend and paying the A&R deposit. If you have not completed the A&R process, please visit https://pro.mst.edu/minerorientation/datesandschedules/

*If you were admitted as a test-optional student, information that you provided at the time of admission for test-optional students will be used in lieu of the test score.

Application Deadlines

Due to the competitive nature of the program, applications will be reviewed in batches.

  • Deadline 1 – January 15
  • Deadline 2 – February 15
  • Deadline 3 – March 15
  • Deadline 4 – April 15

After each deadline, the eligible pool of candidates will be reviewed. Those who do not receive the scholarship in the first pool of candidates will be automatically moved to the candidate pool for the next deadline and so forth. This review process will continue until deadline 4 or until the scholarship funds are exhausted. Students should expect to receive a decision within 7 business days of each deadline.

Apply now

Students that meet the eligibility requirements may apply. Only students who have fully registered for an A&R event will be added to the Kummer Vanguard Scholars Program applicant pool.

The criteria for selecting Kummer Vanguard Scholars will cover broad categories based on the vision that June and Fred Kummer have set for the program. While not required, students are highly encouraged to complete a FAFSA. The idea is to select students who are qualified and deserving to become Kummer Vanguard Scholars.

APPLY NOW

Admitted Kummer Scholar Requirements

Once you have been admitted as a Kummer Scholar you will receive a welcome packet with additional program information.

Students may remain a Kummer Vanguard Scholar for eight academic semesters by continuing in a STEM major, maintaining a 3.2 GPA, and making satisfactory academic progress toward the degree, which is reviewed annually. The student must maintain full-time status as a Missouri S&T student.

Missouri S&T receives $300 million gift from Fred and June Kummer

In the largest single gift in the history of Missouri higher education, St. Louis businessman Fred Kummer and his wife June have donated $300 million to a foundation that will support Missouri S&T.  The new gift will enable the university to establish a new school of innovation and entrepreneurship, develop new areas for research, provide numerous scholarships and fellowships for students, and bolster the Rolla region’s economy.   Click here to read the full article.

Click the image above to learn more about Missouri S&T’s history and accomplishments.

Missouri S&T was chartered on February 24, 1870, as the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy.  Classes were first called to order on November 24, 1871.  This year, we commemorate our 150-year legacy of discovery, creativity and innovation.

There's a New Chief in Town

Missouri S&T graduate Tershawn Wharton has taken his love for football to the next level and signed as an undrafted Free Agent with the reigning Super Bowl Champs, the Kansas City Chiefs.  Tershawn plays defensive line for the Chiefs, and if you’re looking for him on the field, you can find him wearing #98.

When speaking about his experience, Tershawn Wharton said, “As a player, I like to work as hard on the field as I do everywhere else, and coming out of a Division II school, I learned you have to dominate in your league to get noticed.”  Tershawn finished his career at Missouri S&T with 35 ½ sacks, 58 tackles for a loss, and 11 forced fumbles, so you could say he 'dominated in his league'.

With his impressive stats and stature, the 6’4, 225 lb. defensive linemen was named Most Outstanding Player in the NCAA Division II Mineral Water Bowl.  When asked what he learned from playing football at Missouri S&T, he responded, “I was a smaller guy, so I learned to stick to the plan, always be coachable and always be willing to learn.”

If his past is any indication of his future performance, we know Tershawn will make an impact for the Chiefs and maybe help them get to another Super Bowl.  One thing we know for sure, the S&T Miner community will be cheering #98 on all the way!

Experiential Learning is at
the Core of an S&T Education

Design teams do more than just prepare students for their first job, they prepare students to become leaders in industry.  Missouri S&T has 19 student-led design teams that are open to students of any major, background or age.  Team members learn organizational problem-solving skills as they work together to develop market-ready products.

Missouri S&T Rocket Design Team members strive to promote technological advancement and knowledge of the aerospace sciences. The purpose of the team is to expand group members' knowledge of classroom concepts regarding group dynamics, aerospace engineering and real engineering problems.

The Kummer Student Design Center recently doubled its size! It is the home of Missouri S&T’s 19 student design teams. The expansion included additional manufacturing and fabrication bays, a larger machine shop, upgrades to the welding, waterjet and composites labs, new labs for electronics and synthetic biology (iGem), and a remodeled innovation suite.
