Greetings OHS Families

It is hard to believe that we are already three weeks into the second semester and halfway through the 2019-2020 school year.  There’s a wonderful quote by Tim Winton that says, “We rise to a challenge and set a course.  We make a decision.  We put our mind to something.  Just deciding to do it gets you halfway there.  Just daring to try.”  The second semester for students is often like the last two laps of the 400m race.  You round into it with tenacity and focus…as you round the last curve, the last leg is in sight.  The key to the last lap is maintaining that tenacity, focus, and determination to see it through.  To my students, I remind you to pace yourselves and remember that you have a whole team (parents, family, teachers, friends, principals and staff) cheering you on to victory!  And don’t ever hesitate to reach out to us if you need a water break…lol!

OHS Info: Please note that next Wednesday, January 29, 2020 will be a half-day of student attendance.  As we are always committed to preserving instructional time, we have adjusted the schedule for half days.  This adjustment does not impact your student(s)” schedule in any way.  It simply decreases the amount of transition time which helps preserve instructional time for students attending off campus programming.  Attached is the OHS Half-day Schedule Updated Bell Schedule 2019-2020 1.15.20.pdf .  Please feel free to contact me or your grade level principal if you have any questions.

#OHSProud:  As with last semester, I am pleased to showcase the achievements of our OHS students and OHS staff.  Just three weeks into the new semester and the accolades are rolling in…

Here are this week’s Tiger A-PLAWS recognitions…

A huge thank you to Mr. Sparks and the students in his Home Maintenance for their assistance in assembling furniture for our flexible seating pilot classrooms.  This was a great example of real-application of skills.

OHS has a PERFECT SCORE…Congratulations to Hannah Franke who scored a perfect 36 on the ACT in just her second time testing.  Please see Hannah’s feature story on the MSDR9 District website.

Speech and Debate Congrats to Mr. Ed Taylor and his Speech and Debate students.  On January 10, 2020 Oakville was one of 12 schools (143 entrants) participating in the Novice Speech Invitational.  Kudos to Thomas Kallaos who earned 5th in Extemporaneous Speaking, out of 29 entrants – and notably it was Thomas’ first time competing!  In Duo Interpretation, Mitch Aschenbrenner and Carlie Dobbins earned 4th place.  In Prose Interpretation, Courtney Kreyling earned 4th and Ethan Chapman earned 5th.  In Poetry Interpretation, Hailey Yeager earned 6th and Andrew Blanchette earned 2nd

On January 18, 2020, Hailey Yeager placed 7th (just points away from making the finals) in poetry interpretation category at the Greater St. Louis Conference Tournament at University City High School. Over 20 schools participated, and Hailey was competing against 3rd year varsity students.  Kudos Hailey!

Girls’ Dive Kudos to Mason Meinershagen who qualified for State in Dive after winning the Pattonville Meet on January 14, 2020.  Great job Mason…You’ve made a big splash and made us #OHSProud!

Good luck to Mr. Wegener and our all-state choir students traveled to the Missouri Music Educators Association Convention to participate with almost 200 singers from all over the state of Missouri at Tan-Tar-A.  Our 4 singers represent 25% of the students selected in the St. Louis Suburban District, which is a tremendous honor for them.  We are #OHSProud of Riley Hicks, Thomas Schartner, Ben Lanier, Mady Baker!

Thanks to OHS Student Council for all their work to put on our Winter Formal on tomorrow, Saturday, January 25th from 7:00 – 10:00 pm.   All attendees should have purchased a ticket and must enter through the Gym A entrance only.  Come on out and dance the night away…
