Dear OHS students, staff, and families

Yesterday I was made aware of an offensive and unacceptable image that has been circulating on social media which appears to include member(s) of our school community. This post does not reflect the expectations and values of the Oakville School community.

I want to be unequivocally clear that racism and intolerance have no place at Oakville High School. This and all such acts are in direct opposition to our mission and values. Acts like these are in direct antithesis to who we are as a school community.  Oakville High School opposes any actions, words or images that do not respect the dignity and value of all people. Images such as the one posted this week are harmful and they do not reflect the expectations we have for our school community.

As principal of Oakville High School, I am very proud to lead a diverse community of students, and staff. I am proud that my student body is representative of kids who are Black, White, Hispanic and Latino, Asian, LGBTQ, Bosnian, Unique and Special needs, Western European, Middle Eastern, and so many others.

We love and value each of them. And, each and every one of them matters!

I want to remind my students that just weeks ago we received recognition as a National School of Character. This commendation does not come easy.  We, Oakville High School, earned this designation based on our commitment to being a school community that respects, cares for, and celebrates both the things that make us diverse and the things that make us the same – We Are Tigers!

We are a better and a stronger school community when each of us are valued for our differences, our uniqueness, and our contribution to this school community.

I am counting on every Tiger to responsibly represent who we are at OHS.

Dear OHS Tigers

Happy Last Day of School!

Congratulations on completing the 19-20 school year!  And, what a year it has been.

I thought back to a letter I sent you earlier in the school year and  I was really moved by just how true it has become now that you, our students, have successfully braved COVID 19.  Here’s just a snippet from that letter,

“Often the conversations I have had with colleagues in education over the last several years have focused on how we prepare students for the future.  Many of the ideas shared are ways to promote creativity, innovation, and the ability to create/make things that do not already exist.  Often, we discuss how to make sure our students have what it takes to create and brave this new world that’s taking shape.

I often say how wonderful it is to teach this generation of kids and to be able to watch their sense of innovation and creation grow.  It is fascinating and somewhat scary at times.  And, often we wonder whether the outcomes will be all good…

But I believe that if we prepare and remind our children as they move this world forward to take one thing forward with them… TRUTH: the truth of kindness, empathy, humanity…then this new world taking shape will be just fine…”

Well kiddos, you have proven that you have everything it takes to move us forward.  You have successfully met the challenge of “stay-in-place”, of virtual learning and innovative new ways of holding school, of virtual graduations, of drive-by birthdays, and of everything-ZOOM.  I have no doubt that our future is in good hands – YOURS!

In fact on today, May 27, 2020, I know these things for certain:

-You are KIND

-You are BRAVE

I want each and every one of you to know that I and the entire Oakville High School staff love you and are so very proud of you.

You have officially made history!

Here’s to YOU for a JOB WELL DONE!
