This Week at Our House November 4-9
Posted on 11/04/2019

Dear OHS Family,

The developments over the last week have spoken to my belief in the importance of student voice.  I want to reassure our students, staff, and families that safety is our number one priority is safety and that your voices are being heard.

I am sensitive to concerns that have been voiced by some students and families.  Additionally, I am aware that OHS has experienced social media and media attention. My goal is to listen and respond to the needs of our students, our families, and our staff and any concerns they may have and to respond to the facts of the challenge facing our school. As a district and school, we are working daily to ensure the safety and wellbeing of staff and students.  As such, we investigate each matter, provide each student’s right to due process, and respond in accordance to Mehlville School District policy and federal privacy guidelines. Please know that we are following the district policy in this matter.  I have provided this link for the Mehlville School District Discipline Policy.  If you have any questions regarding this policy please feel free to contact me.

Earlier today, I met with a representative body of students to listen directly their concerns.  I value their voices and know that we are always better as a school with their input.  It was a powerful conversation.  I was able to address some of their concerns regarding the events of last week, regarding what they are hearing online, and regarding  their concerns related to safety.

As a result of this conversation, this group of students has committed to working with me on an ongoing basis. We will work together to develop a survey and to identify specific steps that can be taken to continuously improve school climate and safety. My staff and I will provide parents updates of these efforts.

If you or your child have concerns, please reach out directly to me or an assistant principal. Thank you for your help and support as we work to maintain a safe and nurturing learning community at Oakville High School.

Sincerely,

Principal Sunkett This Week at Our House
