Missouri S&T receives $300 million gift from Fred and June Kummer

In the largest single gift in the history of Missouri higher education, St. Louis businessman Fred Kummer and his wife June have donated $300 million to a foundation that will support Missouri S&T.  The new gift will enable the university to establish a new school of innovation and entrepreneurship, develop new areas for research, provide numerous scholarships and fellowships for students, and bolster the Rolla region’s economy.   Click here to read the full article.

Missouri S&T was chartered on February 24, 1870, as the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy.  Classes were first called to order on November 24, 1871.  This year, we commemorate our 150-year legacy of discovery, creativity and innovation.

There's a New Chief in Town

Missouri S&T graduate Tershawn Wharton has taken his love for football to the next level and signed as an undrafted Free Agent with the reigning Super Bowl Champs, the Kansas City Chiefs.  Tershawn plays defensive line for the Chiefs, and if you’re looking for him on the field, you can find him wearing #98.

When speaking about his experience, Tershawn Wharton said, “As a player, I like to work as hard on the field as I do everywhere else, and coming out of a Division II school, I learned you have to dominate in your league to get noticed.”  Tershawn finished his career at Missouri S&T with 35 ½ sacks, 58 tackles for a loss, and 11 forced fumbles, so you could say he 'dominated in his league'.

With his impressive stats and stature, the 6’4, 225 lb. defensive linemen was named Most Outstanding Player in the NCAA Division II Mineral Water Bowl.  When asked what he learned from playing football at Missouri S&T, he responded, “I was a smaller guy, so I learned to stick to the plan, always be coachable and always be willing to learn.”

If his past is any indication of his future performance, we know Tershawn will make an impact for the Chiefs and maybe help them get to another Super Bowl.  One thing we know for sure, the S&T Miner community will be cheering #98 on all the way!

Experiential Learning is at
the Core of an S&T Education

Design teams do more than just prepare students for their first job, they prepare students to become leaders in industry.  Missouri S&T has 19 student-led design teams that are open to students of any major, background or age.  Team members learn organizational problem-solving skills as they work together to develop market-ready products.

Missouri S&T Rocket Design Team members strive to promote technological advancement and knowledge of the aerospace sciences. The purpose of the team is to expand group members' knowledge of classroom concepts regarding group dynamics, aerospace engineering and real engineering problems.

The Kummer Student Design Center recently doubled its size! It is the home of Missouri S&T’s 19 student design teams. The expansion included additional manufacturing and fabrication bays, a larger machine shop, upgrades to the welding, waterjet and composites labs, new labs for electronics and synthetic biology (iGem), and a remodeled innovation suite.
